Tennis Anyone?

The Brewington clan has decided to take up tennis in hopes of living a healthier lifestyle.  Considering Longmont has 15 places you can play tennis for free with two of them are within a mile of our house it makes sense.  Tennis is a great sport for families of all ages, it’s fun, and you get a great workout whether you are hitting the ball or chasing after those pesky stray shots.

The temperature today was broiling.  I mean fry an egg on the hood of the truck hot.  As we were getting out of the Denali, the temperature had reached 100 F and didn’t look like cooling down anytime soon.

Ok so why family tennis?  Well, yours truly really needs to start doing more exercise.  Since moving back to the States and enjoying all the wonderful food offerings,  it appears that I have put on more than 45 pounds.  It does not help that a Sam’s Club has opened down the road from us, oh the tasty croissants, the delicious chocolate muffins, and Angus steaks fit for a king.

My amazing job with Shelter Insurance has me sitting much more than ever before.  Do not get me wrong; I am so grateful to God and the good people at Shelter for this opportunity, it’s  just now I need to make more of an effort to get up off my butt.  It doesn’t help that there is a Winchell’s donut shop (open 24 hours a day) on the corner where my office is.  Lord help me find the willpower to resist.

So tennis it is, we went out to purchased some rackets, we bought a bag of tennis balls, grabbed the kids and headed out to Silver Creek High School for a Sunday afternoon of tennis, or as it turned out whacking the ball in each other’s general direction for an hour.

We spent an hour taking turns hitting and lobbing balls back and forth; we even had a few good volleys.  Chasing down stray shots, running off the court grabbing the few balls that flew over the fence.  There was a lot of laughing and a lot more sweating as the midday sun beat down on us trying its best to melt us into submission.

Yeah I made that shot!!!

It was an excellent time with the family; it was great getting out doing something healthy together.  This day has rekindled my love for tennis.  There were several summers that my friends and I spend countless hours in the backyard playing tennis. 35 years ago in a time before wives, work and kids my best friends, Anders, Wendel, Willie and myself would spend our summer vacation on the court for eight hours a day, playing our version of the US Open over and over again.  Yeah, this was before the internet, cell phones, Playstation and Pokemon Go, when kids would go outside and play.
